On the 1st of September, Steffi Ebbinghaus, technician in our group, is celebrating her 40th anniversary of working for our university. Congratulations, Steffi!

From 2 to 5 August, the American Ceramici Society are holding their first ever Virtual Glass SummitExternal link, with Delia being the programme chair. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic the entire conference is held online only.

July

Roland submitted his doctoral thesis. Well done!

The International Journal of Applied Glass Science (ACerS/Wiley) has published a special issue celebrating female researchers in the field of glassExternal link. This special issue includes 17 original articles with 53 authors, of which 13 were written only by women. The contributing authors come from 12 different countries (including the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, and China), and among them are PhD students, junior and senior researchers. Delia has contributed an article on immersion studies on bioactive glasses together with Leena Hupa from Finland, Dana Rohanová from the Czech Republic and Amy Nommeots-Nomm from the UK.

Dr Araceli de Pablos-Martìn, who did her doctoral studies at CSIC in Madrid, Spain, and worked afterwards at Fraunhofer IMWS in Halle, has started her positoin as a postdoctoral researcher in our group. Welcome, Araceli!

Teaching at our university started on the 4th of May as online only, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual meeting of the Glasses and Optical Materials DivisionExternal link of the American Ceramic Society, which was to be held in New Orleans, Lousiana, from 17 to 21 May, and for which Delia was one of the two programme chairs was cancelled, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is now to be held in August, online only.

Nutty's (doi: 10.1111/ijag.13958External link) and Carsten's (doi: 10.1111/ijag.13477External link) papers, published in the International Journal of Applied Glass Science (Wiley), are among the top 10% of most downloaded papers. Congratulations, Nutty & Carsten, well done!

    March

    From 10th to 13th of March, Jérémy Soulié and Christèle Combes from the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche et d'Ingénierie des Matériaux (CIRIMAT-CNRS)External link, Toulouse, France, are visiting our group to discuss our collaboration on highly disrupted phosphate glasses. Both present in our institute seminar.

    On the 26th of February, Juliane successfully defended her doctoral thesis on borate-substituted bioactive glasses. Congratulations, Juliane!

    Our annual group hike happened early this year: On the 25th of February, we took public transport to Rautal in the north of Jena and from there walked to see the winter aconites (Eranthis hyemalis), before continuing across the Windknollen and concluding with lunch at Papiermühle. Thanks everyone for joining!

    On the 19th of February, Thilo successfully defended his doctoral thesis on phosphate-containing aluminosilicate glasses. Congratulations, Thilo!

    On the 29th of January, Christina Scheffler and Cindy Elschner from the Leibniz Institute for Polymer ResearchExternal link in Dresden visited our group and gave a talk on glass fibre processing for biotextile applications.

    Maximilien Desbord, a visting PhD student from the Institut National Polytechnique de ToulouseExternal link, France, is doing a 6 weeks' research project in our group from 20th January to 29th February, working on phosphates prepared by wet chemical synthesis. Welcome to our group, Maximilien!

    Together with Amy Nommeots-Nomm (McGill University, Montreal, Canada), Leena Hupa (Abo Akademi University, Turku, Finland) and Dana Rohanová (University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague, Czech Republic) Delia has published a joint paperExternal link to be included in a special issue on "Women in Glass Science" to be published in the International Journal of Applied Glass Science, Wiley.

    December

    Franzi successfully applied for beamline time for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements at SolarisExternal link, the Polish Synchrotron in Krakow. From 9 to 12 December, together with people from BAM Berlin and Fraunhofer IMWS Halle she is performing experiments at the PEEM/XAS beamline.

    On the 22nd of November, the Bioactive Glasses group participated in this year's Long Night of ScienceExternal link in Jena. Thanks a lot to Franzi, Mirjam, Dahiana, Michael and Felix for their fantastic work!

    On the 8th of November, Franzi successfully defended her doctoral thesis at the University of Potsdam. Congratulations, Franzi!

    On the 26th of June, which must have been one of the hottest days of the year, we did our annual group hike, or rather: because of the temperatures we turned our planned hike into a leisurely stroll in the MühltalExternal link near Bad Klosterlausnitz.

    On the 17th of May, Delia and Franzi gave a lecture on Glass as part of this years Children's University (KinderUni), aimed at children aged 6 to 8 years. It was great fun!

    February

    Delia, together with Paul Zaslansky, Charité Berlin, successfully applied for beamline time for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements at SolarisExternal link, the Polish Synchrotron in Krakow. The proposal was selected as one of only four successful proposals. From 26 to 27 February 2019, Delia, Franzi and Paul were performing analyses on the chemical environment of aluminium in aluminosilicate and aluminophosphate glasses. A big thank you to Marcin Zajac and Alicja Górkiewicz from Solaris for their fantastic support before and during the measurements!

    November

    Yuki Oi, a visting MSc student from Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan, is doing a 3 months' research project in our group. Yuki is working on phosphate and silicophosphate glasses and looking at their dissolution behaviour. Welcome to our group, Yuki!

    Together with professors Thorsten Schäfer, Falko Langenhorst and Kai Totsche (Geology, University of Jena), Delia successfully applied for a grant under the 91b scheme of the German Research Foundation (DFG)External link to pay for an X-ray 3D microscopeExternal link. This instrument allows for non-destructive 3D analyses with micrometre-resolution, e.g. of bioactive glass scaffolds or glass-ceramics.

    Delia has given a presentation on bioactive glasses as implant materials to the Biology Society of the Prague British International School (PBIS)External link, Czech Republic. The talk was part of this years topic of "superheroes" covered at PBIS, which looks into how new materials improve human lives.

    Nutty won a student presentation award at this year's conferenceExternal link of the International Commission on Glass (ICG)External link held in Yokohama, Japan, from 23rd to 26th September 2018. Congratulations, Nutty, well done - we are very proud of you!

    May

    Franziska Scheffler, who is a geologist by training and who is about to complete her PhD studies at the University of Potsdam, has started her work as a postdoctoral researcher in our group. Steffen Müller, a materials scientist, who completed his diploma thesis in our group some years ago, is now back in the group, supporting us as a research assistant. Welcome to our group, Franzi & Steffen!

    Delia's group chose a perfect day of sunny and warm spring weather for this year's group hike near Jena, followed by a barbecue at the institute. A big thank you to Roland for organising everything!

    Delia has a new DFG project jointly with Dr Araceli de Pablos-Martín (Fraunhofer IMWS, Halle) and Prof. Aldo Boccaccini (University Erlangen-Nuremberg). A kick-off meeting was held in Halle on 16th January 2018.

    Thilo Grammes, doctoral student in Delia's group, successfully applied for funding within the 3rd Starting Ramp Funding RoundExternal link within DFG-funded Priority Programme SPP 1594 "Topological Engineering of Ultra-Strong Glasses". Thilo will spend three months working with Prof. Efstratios Kamitsos at the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Athens, Greece. Congratulations, Thilo!

    Roland, doctoral student in Delia's group, successfully applied for funding by the European Ceramic Society (ECerS) to attend the Winter Workshop 2018 organised by The American Ceramic Society (ACerS). The workshop will be held from 19th to 21st January 2018 at Hilton Daytona Beach, FL, USA. Registration for the workshop includes registration for the 42nd International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC) 2018, which will take place from 21st to 26th January 2018 also at Daytona Beach. Congratulations, Roland!

    Delia, together with Prof. Dominique de Ligny from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, organised a Workshop for Early Career Investigators on "Glass and Silicate Melts - from Theory to Application", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)External link.

    Delia has been appointed as a Professor for Bioactive Glasses at the Otto Schott Institute of Materials Research, University of Jena.

    June

    Gavin Mountjoy, University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, is visiting Delia's group and giving a presentation on characterising the atomic structure of glasses using x-ray and neutron scattering, and molecular dynamics modelling.

    For the second anniversary of the journal Biomedical GlassesExternal link, the journal has published a list of its most downloaded papers. Delia's publication (doi: 10.1515/bglass-2015-0009External link) is among the 5 most downloaded papers.

    March

    Delia is attending the 2017 German-American Frontiers of Engineering SymposiumExternal link, held from 31 March to 2 April near Cincinnati, at GE Aviation in Evendale, Ohio. The symposium is organised jointly by the National Academy of Engineering, USA, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, for 60 invited participants.

    January

    Special Issue published in the International Journal of Applied Glass Science (IJAGS) investigates whether our epoch can be described as the "Glass Age. Articles include topics such as optical fibres, the connection with geology - and an article on Glasses in HealthcareExternal link, written by Delia Brauer together with Julian Jones (London) and Leena Hupa (Turku), covering clinical and commercial uses of bioactive glasses.

    December

    A Special Issue on the Larry Hench Memorial Symposium at GOMD 2016 in Madison, WI, has been published in Biomedical Glasses, edited by Delia Brauer and Julian Jones.     Delia is now a Fellow of the Society of Glass TechnologyExternal link (SGT), UK. This was announced at the conference banquet of the SGT Centenary/ESG 2016 conference in Sheffield, UK, in September 2016.

    Delia has an invited talk at the 13th International Conference on the Structure of Non-Crystalline MaterialsExternal link, held from 24 to 29 July at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada.

    April

    Roland successfully applied for STSM (Short-Term Scientific Missions) funding within the EU COST Action "Newgen" to spend 10 days in Dr Eamonn de Barra's lab at the Centre for Applied Biomedical Engineering Research, University of Limerick, Ireland. Roland works on glass ionomer cements, and is testing the working and setting time of new cement composition in collaboration with Dr de Barra. Congratulations, Roland!

    Delia Brauer and Jonathan Masssera, Tampere University of Technology, Finland, have received funding for a 2-year exchange project (2016-2017) on processing and crystallisation of highly disrupted borosilicate glasses, funded jointly by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Academy of Finland.

    Delia has just received funding (jointly with Prof. Lothar Wondraczek) for investigating the dissolution mechanism of phosphate glasses by a combined approach of 31P NMR techniques and topological constraint modelling.

    March

    Delia has published an invited open access paper (10.1039/C5TB02426AExternal link) on how to control the ion release from bioactive glasses by varying the modifier ionic radius. This is part of the Journal of Materials Chemistry's themed issue "Emerging Investigators 2016: Novel design strategies for new functional materialsExternal link", which "gathers the very best work from materials chemists in the early stages of their independent career", "highlighting 2016's rising stars of materials chemistry research". 

    January

    Together with Prof. Leo van Wüllen (University Augsburg) and Prof. Dominique de Ligny (University Erlangen-Nuremberg) Delia has received a DFG grant on the mechanical properties of silicophosphate and aluminosilicate glasses.     September

    At the Annual Conference of the International Commission on Glass from 20th to 23rd September in Bangkok, Thailand, Delia has been awarded this year's Gottardi Prize of the ICG. The Gottardi PrizeExternal link was initiated in 1987 in memory of Prof. V. Gottardi (former ICG president and affiliated with the University of Padua), and it is awarded annually to young people with outstanding achievements in the field of glass research.

    August

    The first series of papers belonging to the inaugural volume (Vol. 1, 2015) of the open access only journal BIOMEDICAL GLASSES has been published, including a paper by Prof. Larry Hench.

    Oliver Eckardt, whose diploma thesis on the "Synthesis of core-shell hybrid materials" was supervised jointly by Felix SchacherExternal link and Delia, has won the 2nd Place in this years's Oldfield Award of the Society of Glass TechnologyExternal link.

    Delia gave a Keynote Presentation at the 14th International Conference of the European Ceramic Society, 21-25 June 2015 in Toledo, Spain, as part of a special symposium on "Ceramics and Glasses for Healthcare".

    From 20 to 23 April, Dr Leena Hupa, from Åbo Akademi in Turku, Finland, is visiting Delia's lab and giving a talk on the crystallisation behaviour of bioactive glasses in the institute seminar on Wednesday.

    Delia, together with Felix SchacherExternal link, IOMC, has received a grant funded by the German Research Foundation (DFGExternal link) for a 3-year grant on glass ionomer bone cements.

    Delia's invited review paper, covering the structure of bioactive phospho-silicate glasses and how it determines their properties, is being published (in EnglishExternal link and GermanExternal link) by Angewandte Chemie and is now available onlineExternal link.

    Delia is giving a presentation on bioactive phospho-silicate glasses to the Materials Group at the School of Physical Sciences, University of Kent, Canterbury, UK.

    Johan Sangder, an MSc student from Dr Leena Hupa's group at Abo Akademi University, Turku, Finland, is currently spending six weeks in Delia's group, doing research on bioactive glasses. This is part of a bilateral exchange project (funded jointly by the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD, and the Academy of Finland) between the groups in Jena and Turku. Welcome, Johan!

    On 27th February, Delia gave a talk at a mini symposium on bioactive glasses, organised by Prof. Robert Hill, Queen Mary, University of London. The symposium covered various aspects of bioactive glass properties and applications, with a strong focus on dental uses.

    Marta Kasprzyk, a PhD student from Dr Marcin Sroda's group at AGH-University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland, is currently spending some weeks in Delia's group, doing research on fluoride-containing glass ceramics.     Delia is one of the associate editors of a new international open access-only journal, "Biomedical GlassesExternal link", published by De Gruyter, covering areas such as bioactive glasses and phosphate glasses, among others. Editor, Associate Editors, Editorial Board and Advisory Board are comprised by well-known researchers in the field, with a large number of them being also members of Technical Committee 4External link ("Bioglasses") of the International Commission on GlassExternal link.

    Delia is giving an invited talk as part of the Bioactive Glass Symposium in honour of Larry L. Hench at at this year's Conference of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB)External link, 31st August to 3rd September 2014, Liverpool, UK.

    Delia Brauer and Leena HupaExternal link (Åbo Akademi UniversityExternal link, Turku, Finland) have received funding for a two-year bilateral exchange project on the dissolution behaviour of bioactive glasses. The project is funded jointly by the German Academic Exchange SystemExternal link (DAADExternal link) and the Academy of FinlandExternal link. The project gives PhD and MSc students the opportunity to do a research project for up to two months at the partner university.

    Delia's paper "Fluoride-containing bioactive glass-ceramicsExternal link" (Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids 358 (2012) 1438-1442External link) was chosen among a total of six publications in an "Editor's Choice", a "hand-picked selection of key journal content 2012-2014".

    Xiaojing Chen, a PhD student from Dental Physical Sciences, Queen Mary, University of London, is spending one month in Delia's group as part of her PhD studies. The research project is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD. Welcome, Jing! 

    April

    Today German TV station MDR filmed a short feature on the Carl Zeiss FoundationExternal link and projects they fund in Thuringia. The programme includes an interview with Delia about her research on glass and her position in Jena and shows Delia and her students melting glass. The programme will be shown on TV on Monday, 28 April 2014, at 19h on MDR Thuringia. The featureExternal link will be available online for seven days (linkExternal link).

    Delia's research is presented as part of a travelling exhibition on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Carl Zeiss FoundationExternal link, who fund Delia's junior professorship. Aim of the exhibition, which will be presented in Jena, Mainz and Oberkochen, is to inform the general public about activities of the foundation, including the funding of research projects.

    The next meeting, focussing on biomaterials, of the Committee for Glassy and Crystalline Multi-Functional Materials (ak-gkmExternal link, a joint committee of the German Society for Glass Technology, DGGExternal link, and the German Ceramic Society, DKGExternal link) is held at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Erlangen from 27 to 28 February. It is organised jointly by Aldo Boccaccini (Chair of BiomaterialsExternal link at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Erlangen) and Delia.

The photo was taken in 2009 (Department of Materials, Imperial College), and has appeared in several Imperial College publications.

    Joanna Niziołek, a student from Dr Marcin Sroda's group at AGH-University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland, is spending one month in Delia's group , doing research on fluoride-containing glass ceramics. This is part of a DAAD-funded exchange project between the groups in Jena and Krakow. Welcome, Joanna!

    An article about Delia's research on bioactive glassesExternal link and what these glasses can be used for has been published in the German national newspaper "Die Welt". 

    Yesterday the German TV station MDR filmed a short feature on bioactive glasses. The programme shows an interview with Delia about her research and an interview with orthopaedic surgeon Prof. R. KinneExternal link (University Jena, Waldkrankenhaus Eisenberg) about clinical applications.     Delia Brauer and Marcin Sroda (AGH Krakow, Poland) have received funding for a two-year exchange project on fluoride-containing glass systems for optical applications. The project is funded jointly by the German Academic Exchange System (DAAD) and the Polish Ministry for Science and Higher Education (MNiSW).
