From 10th to 13th of March, Jérémy Soulié and Christèle Combes from the Centre Interuniversitaire de Recherche et d'Ingénierie des Matériaux (CIRIMAT-CNRS)External link, Toulouse, France, are visiting our group to discuss our collaboration on highly disrupted phosphate glasses. Our annual group hike happened early this year: On the 25th of February, we took public transport to Rautal in the north of Jena and from there walked to see the winter aconites (Eranthis hyemalis), before continuing across the Windknollen and concluding with lunch at Papiermühle. On the 29th of January, Christina Scheffler and Cindy Elschner from the Leibniz Institute for Polymer ResearchExternal link in Dresden visited our group and gave a talk on glass fibre processing for biotextile applications.

Maximilien Desbord, a visting PhD student from the Institut National Polytechnique de ToulouseExternal link, France, is doing a 6 weeks' research project in our group from 20^th January to 29^th February, working on phosphates prepared by wet chemical synthesis. Welcome to our group, Maximilien!

Franzi successfully applied for beamline time for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements at SolarisExternal link, the Polish Synchrotron in Krakow. From 9 to 12 December, together with people from BAM Berlin and Fraunhofer IMWS Halle she is performing experiments at the PEEM/XAS beamline.

On the 26th of June, which must have been one of the hottest days of the year, we did our annual group hike, or rather: because of the temperatures we turned our planned hike into a leisurely stroll in the MühltalExternal link near Bad Klosterlausnitz.

On the 17th of May, Delia and Franzi gave a lecture on Glass as part of this years Children's University (KinderUni), aimed at children aged 6 to 8 years. It was great fun!

Delia, together with Paul Zaslansky, Charité Berlin, successfully applied for beamline time for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements at SolarisExternal link, the Polish Synchrotron in Krakow. The proposal was selected as one of only four successful proposals. From 26 to 27 February 2019, Delia, Franzi and Paul were performing analyses on the chemical environment of aluminium in aluminosilicate and aluminophosphate glasses. A big thank you to Marcin Zajac and Alicja Górkiewicz from Solaris for their fantastic support before and during the measurements!

November

Yuki Oi, a visting MSc student from Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan, is doing a 3 months' research project in our group. Yuki is working on phosphate and silicophosphate glasses and looking at their dissolution behaviour. Welcome to our group, Yuki!

Together with professors Thorsten Schäfer, Falko Langenhorst and Kai Totsche (Geology, University of Jena), Delia successfully applied for a grant under the 91b scheme of the German Research Foundation (DFG)External link to pay for an X-ray 3D microscopeExternal link. This instrument allows for non-destructive 3D analyses with micrometre-resolution, e.g. of bioactive glass scaffolds or glass-ceramics.

Delia has given a presentation on bioactive glasses as implant materials to the Biology Society of the Prague British International School (PBIS)External link, Czech Republic. The talk was part of this years topic of "superheroes" covered at PBIS, which looks into how new materials improve human lives.

Nutty won a student presentation award at this year's conferenceExternal link of the International Commission on Glass (ICG)External link held in Yokohama, Japan, from 23^rd to 26^th September 2018. Congratulations, Nutty, well done - we are very proud of you!

Franziska Scheffler, who is a geologist by training and who is about to complete her PhD studies at the University of Potsdam, has started her work as a postdoctoral researcher in our group. Steffen Müller, a materials scientist, who completed his diploma thesis in our group some years ago, is now back in the group, supporting us as a research assistant. Delia's group chose a perfect day of sunny and warm spring weather for this year's group hike near Jena, followed by a barbecue at the institute. A big thank you to Roland for organising everything!

Delia has a new DFG project jointly with Dr Araceli de Pablos-Martín (Fraunhofer IMWS, Halle) and Prof. Aldo Boccaccini (University Erlangen-Nuremberg). A kick-off meeting was held in Halle on 16th January 2018.

Thilo Grammes, doctoral student in Delia's group, successfully applied for funding within the 3rd Starting Ramp Funding RoundExternal link within DFG-funded Priority Programme SPP 1594 "Topological Engineering of Ultra-Strong Glasses". Thilo will spend three months working with Prof. Efstratios Kamitsos at the National Hellenic Research Foundation in Athens, Greece. Congratulations, Thilo!

Roland, doctoral student in Delia's group, successfully applied for funding by the European Ceramic Society (ECerS) to attend the Winter Workshop 2018 organised by The American Ceramic Society (ACerS). The workshop will be held from 19th to 21st January 2018 at Hilton Daytona Beach, FL, USA. Registration for the workshop includes registration for the 42nd International Conference and Expo on Advanced Ceramics and Composites (ICACC) 2018, which will take place from 21st to 26th January 2018 also at Daytona Beach. Delia is attending the 2017 German-American Frontiers of Engineering SymposiumExternal link, held from 31 March to 2 April near Cincinnati, at GE Aviation in Evendale, Ohio. The symposium is organised jointly by the National Academy of Engineering, USA, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany, for 60 invited participants.

Roland successfully applied for STSM (Short-Term Scientific Missions) funding within the EU COST Action "Newgen" to spend 10 days in Dr Eamonn de Barra's lab at the Centre for Applied Biomedical Engineering Research, University of Limerick, Ireland. Roland works on glass ionomer cements, and is testing the working and setting time of new cement composition in collaboration with Dr de Barra. Congratulations, Roland!

Delia Brauer and Jonathan Masssera, Tampere University of Technology, Finland, have received funding for a 2-year exchange project (2016-2017) on processing and crystallisation of highly disrupted borosilicate glasses, funded jointly by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Academy of Finland.

Delia has just received funding (jointly with Prof. Lothar Wondraczek) for investigating the dissolution mechanism of phosphate glasses by a combined approach of ³¹P NMR techniques and topological constraint modelling.

Delia has published an invited open access paper (10.1039/C5TB02426AExternal link) on how to control the ion release from bioactive glasses by varying the modifier ionic radius. This is part of the Journal of Materials Chemistry's themed issue "Emerging Investigators 2016: Novel design strategies for new functional materialsExternal link", which "gathers the very best work from materials chemists in the early stages of their independent career", "highlighting 2016's rising stars of materials chemistry research".

Together with Prof. Leo van Wüllen (University Augsburg) and Prof. Dominique de Ligny (University Erlangen-Nuremberg) Delia has received a DFG grant on the mechanical properties of silicophosphate and aluminosilicate glasses. At the Annual Conference of the International Commission on Glass from 20th to 23rd September in Bangkok, Thailand, Delia has been awarded this year's Gottardi Prize of the ICG. The Gottardi PrizeExternal link was initiated in 1987 in memory of Prof. V. Gottardi (former ICG president and affiliated with the University of Padua), and it is awarded annually to young people with outstanding achievements in the field of glass research.

The first series of papers belonging to the inaugural volume (Vol. 1, 2015) of the open access only journal BIOMEDICAL GLASSES has been published, including a paper by Prof. Larry Hench.

Oliver Eckardt, whose diploma thesis on the "Synthesis of core-shell hybrid materials" was supervised jointly by Felix SchacherExternal link and Delia, has won the 2nd Place in this years's Oldfield Award of the Society of Glass TechnologyExternal link.

Today German TV station MDR filmed a short feature on the Carl Zeiss FoundationExternal link and projects they fund in Thuringia. The programme includes an interview with Delia about her research on glass and her position in Jena and shows Delia and her students melting glass. Delia's research is presented as part of a travelling exhibition on the occasion of the 125^th anniversary of the Carl Zeiss FoundationExternal link, who fund Delia's junior professorship. Aim of the exhibition, which will be presented in Jena, Mainz and Oberkochen, is to inform the general public about activities of the foundation, including the funding of research projects.
